I'm Going To Be Scarce

OK OK you are probably thinking, "going to be scarce"? So what does she call her recent absences from the blogging community.

Yes I know I have been absent a lot of late but that was mainly due to really biting off more than I could chew and poor time management as well. Well this month is set to be very busy indeed and blogging and all it entails I would expect to come to a virtual stand still.

So what has been and what will be keeping me busy you wonder:

• I am please to say I completed my June ATC on time, actually over a week in advance (the theme was DREAMS) , my partner received it and so now I can show it here.

Stars Are Where Dreams Are Made.

• My youngest turns five tomorrow (I don't do big birthday parties every year but only on specific birthdays) The number 5 is a big party year, so I'm currently planning and preparing for the kiddy invasion on Saturday.
• I am also working on one of the books of a participating member of the altered book round robin swap I blogged about previously (here & here). It is due to be completed and back on its round robin journey on the 8th of July so I'll blog about it when I'm done. There will be one more book to do after this one.
• Lastly I am also currently going through the preparation stages for my first ever Handmade Jewellery Party.

I am terrified that my stuff won't be well received, as well as the worry that no one will turn up. The invites are out, I am tweeting and facebooking about it. So I am spending a large chunk of my days creating stock along with other preparations.

Here are some of the preparations, making gift bags for purchases (fingers crossed), making displays and tags for my pieces and lots of other stuff. I am writing a list and checking it twice, too make sure I cover all the possibilities I could think of.

If you have thrown a Jewellery party before and have any tips I would be eternally grateful to receive them.

And like the virtual invite says above, if you are in the Kent area and would like to have a cool girly evening out, then email me for more details, I would love to meet you.

So that's it really, I can honestly say I have nothing big planned for the month of August and I plan to keep it that way. I need to be careful to not burn myself out, so August month is going to be all about slowing down and enjoying the ride, rather than being in the driver's seat with the no idea where the breaks are!

RAINBOW HEART: My Bead Soup Party Reveal

Well its Bead Soup Reveal Day and by some stroke of good fortune I have met the deadline. As you know by my previous posts I have bitten off a little more than I can chew in the number of projects I have signed myself up for. So with all that has been going on I only got my soup started on Thursday the 17th, which I got completed yesterday during the day (Isn't amazing what you can do under pressure). The weather has not been cooperative though and so I have been impatiently waiting for the sun to shine so I could take some photos, which in between the scattered showers today I was able to do when the sun peaked out momentarily. .
So anyway lets get down to the reveal, as I previously shared with you before, my bead soup partner this time is Johanna. She sent me the beads and clasp pictured below, in all honesty pink is not a colour I wear or generally work with, so the challenge was on.

I started first by creating a pendant focal piece with the large heart shaped bead. Using linked eye pins I attached four bits of silver coloured chain which I topped of with one of Johanna made lampworked beads.
.

I really wanted to inject some colour into the design (mainly because I don't really own and pink coloured clothing), so I added some etched glass beads of various colours, to one side of the necklace.
.
I also really enjoy adding fibre to my designs so to complement both the coloured and pink beads I added a double length of pink rat tail cording and a double length of multi thread fibre cording (but I also wrapped it in very fine pink beading wire to keep it from unravelling), the multi thread fibre cording also had threads of the colours of the bright glass beads. Which I hope will help to balance the piece.

I only used one side of the clasp in the design because the other half was missing a hole (see pic to the right) so I could not easily attach it to the necklace (and remember I was kinda running out of time). I hope at a later stage to find away to attach it to the necklace.

So that was the design process, I am please with the outcome and I wore it yesterday and today when I went out with the girls. I asked others I met to give their opinions on whether the piece worked well with all the differing components and mostly everyone liked it, though I think it was case of they thought its quirky nature matched my general style. So still not sure of its public appeal.

I wore it with two differing single colour outfits and found because of the multi colour beads it easily matched what I was wearing both times. So I can happily say it will be worn quite a bit, so thank you Johanna for the beads you sent me and thanks as well to Lori the Bead Soup Party Host for organising another satisfying party.

Altered Book Round Robin and Bead Soup Sneak Peak

Just a quick update on the Altered Book Round Robin Swap I'm currently hosting. I completed the pages of Tracey's book which was a book of poems, so using the poems as inspiration, I glued, cut, collaged, etc some of the pages. Here is a video of the pages I altered.

I must say I am really enjoying this art form and look forward to putting my mark on the other participant's books.

I am currently working on completing my Bead Soup jewellery piece. The big reveal starts tomorrow the 19th and will run till the 26th. Being Featured & Blogshop Update

Hi everybody, don't know if you have noticed but I have been very quiet on the blog front recently and I have actually not even been able to read a blog since last Thursday, such was the busy state of me life of late.

In my last post I wrote about an up coming deadlines for a blog giveaway featuring my Blogshop and well with three 4:00am bedtimes and numerous more late nights, I have made said deadline and all three of my online selling venues have been updated with the new stock I am hoping to expand into (anyone selling online will attest to the large amount of time listing new items take, all I can say was thank goodness we had some sunny days, this made photo taking easy and hassle free).

Sickness, Despondancy, Sleepovers, Giveaway Winnings, Possible Projects, Deadlines, Bead Soup & Round Robin Updates...

Yes this post is going to be a little bit about everything that's been going on these last couple of weeks. So you might want to grab a cup of coffee/ tea/ glass of wine, whatever is your poison, cause its a long one.
.
The month of May started off with illness within the family home, vomiting kiddies, cold and flu infections, I won't bore you with the particulars but will say that with the exception of a lingering slightly stuffy and sometimes runny nose along with a loud snore (the little one is still getting over the tail end of her cold) we are all pretty much over it.
.
The unwelcome illness really threw a spanner in the works and all my grand plans of creating a piece a day which was to facilitate weekly listings of new products to my blogshop, went straight out the window, which is where the despondency feelings come into play, these feelings were amplified by my apparent misplacement of my green thumb, in that I am experiencing for the first time ever a near 100% failure in germinating my seeds this year and with the prospect of no summer homegrown veges on the horizon, I can say I am in a quiet state of inner panic (yes it is that important to me).
.
So we are just getting over the colds and I am slowly feeling my energy levels returning and the kids harangue me into hosting a sleepover last weekend with three of their friends (three sisters). Thank goodness they are all pretty good kids.
.

The little ones wanted to try their hands at making ATCs, they did them to a flower theme. They did quite well, don't you think?

So last week was coming to an end and I was still feeling a little blue because I felt I wasn't achieving any of the goals I had set myself. But God is good and blessed me with some little pick me ups that made me feel I was quite lucky after all, yep I won a few more blog giveaways, yeah! me :)
.
The first one was from the fabulous Esther, I was lucky to have won one of her exquisitely made micro books in a giveaway on her blog. I didn't even find out about winning straight away as I was at my worst with the flu when she posted on her blog, it was when I was catching up on reading blogs I found out.
.
Now look at it, isn't it perfect?
.
It arrived while I was in bed two weekends ago and accidentally got put into the magazine basket, it was only while looking for reading material during last week did I find the envelope. In it was the beautiful micro book and a sweet little scarf pin, which is already on the lapel of one of my spring jackets. Thanks again Esther, your creation is even more beautiful when seen with the naked eye. I am not sure how I am going to use the Micro book charm as yet but most likely I'll make something for myself with it.
.
My second giveaway I recently won was some beads, (I tell you, He is smiling down on me and giving me what I need and I need new supplies real bad). This giveaway was hosted on the lovely Lorelei's blog and lucky, lucky me won them and again because I was relegated to the couch again but this time with a sick child snoozing on my lap I didn't see the posting till the next day and all most fell off my seat when I saw my name.
.

Aren't they beautiful and so full of possibilities. The beads were donated for the giveaway from Sab of BeadBead. They were posted in the mail on the 14th and they arrived yesterday, isn't it amazing how efficient international post is when there are no ashes grounding flights.
.
Oh and on a sideline note: The mom of my daughter's friends who they had over for the sleepover gave me four hollowed out goose eggs, not yet sure what I will do with them but I will be doing something with them in the future, hmm! Do any of you have any possible project suggestions?
.
On the 18th I was contacted by the blog writer of Handmade crafts UK concerning my offer to sponsor a giveaway. I was ever so tempted to say no, why? Well I also have to write about myself, blah blah, blah, you get the drift but I grabbed the keyboard and typed out yes and clicked send before my brain could intervene, so I am now committed to a deadline date of the 25th to write a piece about myself and my products as well as create the giveaway prizes and some new stock for the Blogshop, the clock I ticking and I am yet to get started, what have I gotten myself into.
.
Now for a bead soup party update, first I would like to introduce you to my partner Johanna of Fire Phoenix Jewellery, she is a lampworker and bead weaver.
.
And the beads she sent me arrived yesterday.
.
The heart focal, gem stones and light matte pink glass beads were purchased, along with the very interesting clasp she got in Spain.
.
These lampworked beads in pink and black were made by Johanna. These are not colours I would normally work with it so I know I am going to find it a challenge, which is one of the main reasons for joining this swap.
.
So do you want to see what I sent her...
.
Now last time I sent my partner something I made and I think I will stick to that theme for these type of swaps. I want to make more and more focal pieces that others can use as well as myself and I think this helps me to see what my pieces can turn into outside of how I envision them (I do hope that made sense).
.
So this is what I sent Johanna, I do hope she likes it and more importantly can use them.

I created a focal by first painting with acrylic paint a bluebell design (they are in their full bloom at the moment and their colours are so vibrant and inspiring). I backed it with some black felt so that it will comfortable against the skin as well as lending weight to the piece. I then made a frame with some scrap copper wire which was then attached to the pieces using two contrasting colours of embroidery thread. The piece can be used either as a pendant or as a piece within a necklace, the jumprings at the bottom can be removed or can be used to attach further dangles.

I created a button clasp (tutorial available here at Lorelei's blog) with a vintage ceramic button from France and some more scrap wire.
.

Along with the focal and clasp I included some coordinating beads, Red Coral, Sodalite, Troca Shell, Pearls. I also included some more copper links, jumprings and a small roll of copper wire in case she wanted to continue the copper theme.
.
Ok time to update you on the Necklace Round Robin I hosted, my finished piece arrived yesterday (yesterday was a nice day to receive mail, three packets fell through my door and there were no bills, yippee!).

Well I am sooooo please with the completed piece, I tweaked it a bit so that it was lying at the correct length but the essence of their additions are still prominant.

To top of that they both sent me earrings to match the piece;

and Jane's is perfect for that floaty all white summer dress ensemble....

April ATCs, an Update on The Necklace Round Robin and The Bead Soup Party Is Back

UK Handmade April 2010 ATCs themed: SONGS are winging their way to or have already arrived at their intended recipients see some of the cards here at the flickr groups page. I received mine last week but I was waiting for my recipient to receive mine before I posted about them both.

Here is mine:

April 2010 ATC: Songs - Titled GOLDEN

Jill Scott - Golden

It was inspired by one of my favourite recording artist Jill Scott, the song is titled Golden, this song always lifts my spirits and reminds me to believe in myself.

It was sent to Jane of Hooked Yarn.

I made it with upcycled cereal box card which I cut to size and then wrote the words with fabric puff paint. When the paint was dry I activated it with a heat gun.

I then applied the gold leaf sizing adhesive to the entire front of the card and the puffed painted words.

Once the adhesive was tacky to touch I applied the gold leaf sheets (using a soft paint brush to manipulate it into all the nooks and crannies). I repeated the sizing and leaf application steps till I acquired the look and coverage I was after.

Now on to the ATC that was sent to me.

The ATC was made and sent to me by Lesley Purcell and it represents the song titled 'I Like Birds' by Eels you can visit her blog: Wild Things to learn more about her beautifully created art and wearable art pieces which are inspired by nature.

And here is the cool ATC I was lucky to receive:

She explained in her note that besides being a big bird fan and a fan of the group's whose music she represented. The painting of the House Sparrow is one she took a picture of when it fed on the crumbs of a sandwich she was eating, I think her talent for detail is phenomenal. The added embroidery touches adds a certain whimsy to the piece as well.

At the back of the card if you just look past the vellum type paper which she has hand written her details, you can just about make out the collage of birds, rockets and other items, I thought this was a cool touch and completed the card beautifully.

Necklace Round Robin Swap Update

So its time for that Round Robin Swap post I briefly mentioned previously. The swap comprises of myself and two others and it is more of an collaboration than a swap. We each started necklaces (in varying degrees as you'll see further on in the post). All the pieces then came to me the swap's host, I then proceeded to put my stamp on the other participant's items before sending all three pieces onto the next designer, who would then send it on to the other participant, who would intern send the finished necklaces back to their origins. I am looking forward to owning a fabulously unique piece of jewellery to where this summer.

Anyway it is time to introduce the other participating designers of this my first Round Robin Swap.

Victoria of GiddyStuff

Victoria drew inspiration for her piece's start from the sea, she blogs about it here and shares further about this RR journey she has embarked on here and here.

This is her starter piece, don't you just love her wired fish focal.

Upon see her starter I immediately thought of a teal blue cotton ribbon I could use which I doubled and attached to some links I made with wire and clear seed beads which will tie n with the larger clear beads Victoria used. I also doubled the ribbon over a blue glass bead and contrasting pinkish coloured craft wire was used to keep it all in place.

Trying to keep to Victoria's sea theme I placed at the bottom of the ribbon an iridescent shell fragment which I have had in my stash now for 16+ years, it felt good to finally put it to use.

I desperately wanted to add another fish element but I had no fishy charms and nor did my local craft store. I had already given up the search for this element but then I came across a practice piece of friendly plastic which made me think of waves and while I was trying to figure out how I might use it in the piece, when the patterns suddenly spoke to me and I saw fish scales. A little while later after a visit to the scissors I had my fish which I added a tiny faux pearl seed bead link too.

I though I was all finished but when I woke Saturday something felt like it was missing and my mind kept going back to the pearls in Victoria's inspirational collage images above, so I created and attached a string of faux pearl seed beads to the piece creating another strand element to the item.

Here is Victoria's piece with all the elements I added, she didn't specify a length so I have tried to keep it somewhere in the middle range, I do hope she likes it.

Jane of Hooked Yarn

Look at this pendant Jane put together.

Jane's only specifications was for a long necklace and that her tastes lent to a more vintage vibe and though she liked colour she didn't want anything too colourful.

Immediately upon seeing Jane's pendant both myself and my eldest thought of Japan but as I had nothing in my stash that lent to that style it was onto plan no:2. the colours in the pendant made me think of some more fibre elements in my collection, this time it was some roughly woven mixed fibre cord I purchased a month ago at a craft fair I visited.

I used some upcyled brass elements from a charity store purchase at either end of the mixed fibre cording and some brass wire was used to wrap and attach some beads and charm elements to the cording.

Lastly I added a length of brass linked chain (another charity shop upcycled item) to create a double strand element to the piece, which besides tieing the piece together it helps the middle link at the top of the pendant to stand up.

And this is Jane's piece with my added elements, although the cording has many colours I think they blend well and do not stand out harshly but complements the pendant, well at least I hope it is perceived this way. Jane I hope you like yours too.

So you are probably wondering where is my starter...

Well here it is, I used scrap copper wire from my hubby's work and hammered some strips flat (I hammered them on concrete which gave them a distressed look) and wrapped them in some roughly homespun wool I got from a freecycle member in my area. I then wrapped on with a finer gauge wire some faux turquoise beads. I got inspiration for this idea from a most talented jewellery designer Mariedodd.

With the finer gauge wire I also created some jump ring links for the pendant which I attached a scrap of material I cut in to a ribbon and dyed with food colouring (after rinsing out the strip of material I allowed it to dry all balled up to help give it an aged look).

On the other end of the doubled up fabric strip I attached a larger link made with the thicker gauge wire and using one of the smaller jump ring links I hung a small ceramic bead.

It was hard to not complete this piece and I was most tempted to do so and start something else but I forgo temptation and I look forward to seeing what Victoria and Jane adds to it.

Another thing I noticed while I was working on the pieces was that some how I seem to have developed a theme of using fabric/ fibre and it has unconsciously featured itself in all three pieces. This was not my intention and I had no preconcieved ideas on how to embellish the pieces that were going to be sent to me but I simply acted on my first thoughts when I saw the two pieces sent to me. Ah well I must be going through a fibre moment, who am I to argue with my current muse, I quite like the outcomes.
